Derby County's Morgan Whittaker to join as Paul Arriola and Joel Asoro situations explained plus loan plans shelved - Swansea City transfer deadline day update

Morgan Whittaker is set to join Swansea City from Derby County on a permanent deal today.

The versatile attacker is set to undergo a medical at Fairwood on Monday afternoon with a view to officially moving to the Liberty Stadium before the 11pm deadline.

However, it's understood that Whittaker will not be a direct replacement for the injured Liam Cullen.

The 20-year-old - who has made 11 appearances in all competitions for the Rams' first team this season - was identified as a transfer target by the club's recruitment team as a player that could be developed for the future.

Given Swansea's lack of depth up top at present, Whittaker may well need to be thrust into the limelight by taking a place on the bench in the coming months as Steve Cooper's side continue their push for promotion.

Head coach Cooper has been desperate to bring in a number nine given that the Swans only have Jamal Lowe, Andre Ayew and Jordan Morris - who are all traditionally wide players - available as forward options at present.

However, it appears as though the boss will not be afforded the funds necessary to bring in a striker on deadline day, despite lining up potential deals - with Leeds United's Sam Greenwood mooted as an option - that could have significantly strengthened the squad, and, in turn, the club's top two aspirations.

The boss - along with the club's recruitment team - are continuing to work on bringing in a nine.

It's also understood that Paul Arriola will not be joining the club from DC United.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a loan switch to the Liberty Stadium this month.

Arriola scored twice for the United States Men's National team in their 7-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night.

However, given the club's links to the Major League Soccer outfit, a deal could be quickly turned around should Swansea look to add to their squad late on deadline day.

Meanwhile, Joel Asoro is set to have his loan with Genoa cancelled.

Swansea are in talks with the Serie A outfit in a bid to find a resolution over the attacker, who has not played a single minute of action for the Italians this term.

Cooper revealed earlier this month that Asoro would not feature in his plans at SA1 even if his loan in Italy was terminated prematurely.

The Swans are hopeful that Asoro - whose contract doesn't expire until the summer of 2022 - can secure another loan switch away from the club. It may well even be the case that he moves elsewhere beyond today's UK deadline given that moves to certain clubs away from these shores will still be possible after Monday.

Swansea had hoped to send out a few younger players - including Ollie Cooper - on loan this month.

However, given the dwindling numbers in the squad of late following the injuries suffered by Wayne Routledge and Cullen - it appears as though Swansea will not be sending anyone out on Monday.

Youngsters Cameron Evans, Ollie Cooper and Dan Williams were all listed among the substitutes in the 3-1 triumph over Rotherham last time out, with those three boasting just three senior appearances between them.

So, barring a late U-turn from the top brass at the club, it looks set to be a fairly uneventful transfer deadline day for the Swans.

The Swans are currently second in the Championship having claimed 50 points from their 26 league outings to date.
