Derby County players suffer setback on eve of Wayne Rooney's debut

Nottingham Forest's arch-rivals Derby County have failed to pay their players on time, reports have claimed, on the eve of Wayne Rooney's expected Rams debut.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the Rams failed to pay their players on time amid ongoing efforts to attract new investment to the Championship club.

According to  the Mail  , the Derby squad were due to receive their monthly pay on New Year’s Eve, but were told by the club there would be a delay.

The report adds: “The issue has been attributed to the fact that the investment, in the pipeline for some weeks, has still to be signed off.

“Players were reassured that owner Mel Morris was working to find a solution, and a Derby spokesman confirmed they will be paid on Thursday (January 2).”

Derby officials confirmed to  Derbyshire Live  that the players will be paid today.

The report emerged on the eve of Rooney’s much anticipated debut for the Rams, expected to come this evening (7.45pm) when they play Barnsley at Pride Park.
