Derby County looking to bring in Manchester United player ahead of pre-season meeting

Derby County will be looking forward to getting back to talking about actual football, rather than events off the field.

The last few months have seen the Rams dogged by legal wrangles. Their Championship status was even thrown into doubt but las week saw them able to breathe a little easier when the EFL announced it wouldn't be appealing an independent panel's decision to fine the club £100,000 for its accounting policies.

Had a points deduction been handed down to County, they would have been retrospectively relegated into League One.

Despite that good news, manager Wayne Rooney has had a slow summer on the recruitment front with plenty leaving Pride Park but no new arrivals.

The club was named as one of eight EFL teams under a transfer embargo earlier this week, meaning Rooney is likely to be limited to free transfers and loan signings in this window.

To that end, it's believed Rooney is attempting to borrow a talented youngster from his old Manchester United.

Teden Mengi spent the second half of last season with Derby, making nine appearances.

And Rooney is keen on another loan spell for the 19-year-old, with a verbal agreement thought to be in place.

However, the Athletic report that nothing can be rubber-stamped until Derby's financial situation clears up. Additionally, under the terms of Derby's embargo, loanees would only be able to sign half-season agreements.

There is a chance that Mengi could even line up against Derby when United visit Pride Park next week for a friendly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side visit on Sunday, July 18 with a crowd of 8,000 permitted to attend.

The game is United's first of pre-season and could see a clutch of youngsters, Mengi included, start the game as senior stars continue to recover from the Euros and Copa America tournaments.

Derby begin the new Championship season at home to Huddersfield on August 7, whilst United begin their campaign seven days later at home to Leeds United.
