Derby County cancel players' Christmas party after chaos of last boozy team-session

Derby County are not throwing a Christmas party for their players after their last boozy team-session ended in chaos.

The Athletic reports that a meeting was held between Phillip Cocu’s squad, staff and administrators and a "common sense" choice made.

Instead, the players will have to settle for a Christmas lunch that is usually reserved for staff members.

It comes after a drink-fuelled team-bonding session in September began a chain of events that saw Derby duo Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence arrested for drink-driving after a car crash.

Ireland defender Richard Keogh, a passenger in Lawrence's Land Rover Sport, sustained a season-ending knee injury in the incident.

Keogh was later sacked by the club for gross misconduct for his involvement, while Lawrence and Bennett have remained at the club.

The Championship club are clearly not risking a repeat of the incident three months on.
