Derby County boss insists 'difficult' Leeds United can be defeated

Leeds United will present a 'difficult' challenge for Derby County but Rams boss Phillip Cocu feels that his side can still leave Elland Road with a result.

The Whites welcome back their Championship rivals to West Yorkshire on Saturday for the first time since their ill-fated play-off encounter in May, when the visitors overturned a first-leg deficit to dump Marcelo Bielsa’s side out of the race for Premier League promotion.

United, who returned to the top of the second tier with a win against Barnsley at the weekend, have picked up where they left off from last season in response and will be keen to claim revenge against their Midlands visitors.

County, conversely, have won only one league game under Cocu so far, after he replaced the departed Frank Lampard in charge of the club, and the Dutchman admits that Leeds are an excellent side.

However the former PSV and Barcelona star has backed his side to bring their A-game after they held Cardiff to a draw last time out.

'It is always possible to get a result'

“It will be a big occasion, absolutely,” he told RamsTV. “They play very well and are a very good team.

“[But] it is a game of football, anything is possible. If we can bring our game to this match, we know we can be a hard team to beat.

“It is a difficult game, but it is always possible to get a result. They can play football, but we can play as well.

“We have to show our performance against Cardiff was not just a single game, we need to do it again against Leeds.”
