Derby County become the latest Championship club charged with financial misconduct by the EFL

Derby County have become the latest club to be charged with financial misconduct by the English Football League.

The Rams join Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City on the list of clubs with an EFL charge hanging over them in the Championship.

The EFL confirmed that Derby would face a Disciplinary Commission after they were found guilty of breaking Profitability and Sustainability rules.

A statement released on Thursday evening said: "Following a review of Derby County’s Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) submissions, the EFL has charged the Club for recording losses in excess of the permitted amounts provided for in EFL Regulations for the three-year period ending 30 June 2018.

"The Club will now be referred to an independent Disciplinary Commission, which will hear representations from both the EFL and Derby County.

"As these matters are now subject to proceedings, the EFL will be making no further comment at this time."

Derby had hoped they would avoid any Financial Fair Play charges after owner Mel Morris purchased the Pride Park stadium.

However, the EFL have still found the Rams guilty of breaching financial rules, despite their 2017/18 accounts recording a profit, as a result of the stadium sale.

EFL regulations state that a club must not exceed a loss of more than £39m over three seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City also remain at loggerheads with the governing body over financial charges presented to them this season.

The Blues were deducted nine points by the EFL last season for breaking FFP spending limits, a fate that could fall upon all three clubs again if they are found guilty.

Bristol City finished four points behind Derby County last season.
