Derby could yet be relegated to League One as Wycombe weigh up legal challenge

Wycombe Wanderers could potentially challenge their relegation to League One, over an alleged spending breach by Derby County.

The Rams beat the drop on a dramatic final day in the Championship, with their 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday enough to keep them in the division, narrowly ahead of Wycombe.

The Chairboys beat Middlesbrough 3-0 to finish just one point behind Derby, and therefore were relegated back to League One along with Wednesday and Rotherham.

However, Wycombe are said to be contemplating legal action against Derby, with Wayne Rooney's side involved in a long-running battle with the EFL.

The club were cleared of both charges put to them in January 2020, one relating to the sale of the club's Pride Park Stadium to owner Mel Morris and the other about how the club amortises the value of its players.

The EFL appealed the second charge and the club is still awaiting the outcome.

But Wycombe owner Rob Couhig says the club may fight to get the Rams punished this season - something that would give a reprieve to the Chairboys.

He said: "I don’t know that the season is over yet. To me, we have accumulated all the points we can and now we will see what happens.

“People tell me that Derby County have issues out there. I don’t know whether we’re ready to go to lawyers yet. The message is: Watch this space."

If Derby did drop into League One, then it could make for an interesting promotion push next season, joining the likes of Portsmouth, Ipswich, Sheff Wed and Rotherham in what will be a fiercely-fought contest.

Sunderland will be hoping to avoid any involvement, of course, by winning promotion this season through the play-offs, and face Lincoln in a two-legged semi-final next week.

The winners of that tie will play either Blackpool or Oxford United at Wembley on May 30.
