Derby at the drive-in: Epsom races galloping onto the big screen

With the famous Epsom Derby horse race being held behind closed doors this year, punters can instead watch the action on the big screen come July 4.

Bookmaker Fitzdares are hosting a drive-in derby, inviting race-lovers to pull up in their cars at a secret location in west London on the day when restrictions ease across the country. The race itself takes place at 4.45pm, with the fillies’ Oaks race taking place beforehand.

Commentary will be piped into cars via the radio, with guests encouraged to dress in their finest Derby Day outfits. Food and drink will be available, while guests can also bring along their own picnics.

The news comes after the announcement of drive-in film screenings and musical events across the country, with the format lending itself to social distancing.

William Woodhams, CEO of Fitzdares said: “It has been wonderful to see sport return but a little eerie not hearing the sound of fans enjoying it. With such a spectacle of horse racing happening we couldn’t resist finding an innovative and fun way of enjoying the action.

“Weirdly it was an old idea, the drive-in movie that inspired us. We hope everyone enjoys a very safe day but with the sound of the race goers roar back again.”

Tickets for each car are £100, with a maximum of five people per car. For more information and to buy tickets, head here.
