Derby accountancy firm which started in a caravan expands its team

A Derby accountancy firm which began life in a caravan has marked its third birthday by announcing a raft of new hires.

Ascentant, which is now based in Laurie House, in Colyear Street, specialises in providing accountancy services to small and medium-sized businesses, in addition to specialist legal cashiering and compliance services to legal practices.

Now, due to growing demand for outsourced legal cashiering services, the firm has hired Natalie Gilchrist from Sort Legal and Emma Hawkins from Maclaren Warner solicitors. Both Natalie and Emma have joined as senior legal cashiers.

Emma joins to head up Ascentant’s legal aid division, supporting legal practices with legal aid contracts.

Natalie joins to supervise the firm’s growing team of legal cashiers, sharing her experience of working with law firm start-ups and regulatory compliance.

Balbinder Rattu also joins Ascentant to support its accountancy practice with bookkeeping, VAT management and payroll.

Managing director Kevin Drew said: “Having started the business three years ago in a caravan, we have come a long way to have a team of eight.

“Emma and Natalie’s experience will help us to grow our legal cashiering division with enhanced technical and regulatory knowledge and support.

“We have outgrown our current office and will now be searching for premises in the Derby area to accommodate the continued growth of the business.”
