Deranged coronavirus graffiti featuring a swastika daubed in Jesmond Dene

Bizarre graffiti spreading Covid-19 conspiracy theories has been sprayed at a Newcastle beauty spot.

The deranged scribblings were left daubed on the floor of Jesmond Dene on Saturday.

Newcastle City Council workers moved in swiftly to remove it.

The graffiti, which featured a swastika, referenced baseless theories about the pandemic being a man made ploy to institute an all-powerful world government.

Conspiracy theories are rife online, as are rumours and harmful misinformation about the disease.

The spread of lies online is a real concern for authorities.

Back in March, the Government took out advertising space in national newspapers spelling out a five-point checklist people should use to assess information before they believe it.

Scammers are also capitalising on this trend, duping people into handing over personal information.

Quite often, these conspiracy theories and myths originate on social media - but they also sometimes come from the very top.

In April, US President Donald Trump falsely claimed introducing bleach or disinfectant into your body could fight Covid-19. The World Health Organisation were forced to publicly contradict him.

A council spokesperson said: “We did receive reports of offensive graffiti in a few locations in Jesmond Dene, and dispatched a clean up team to ensure it was quickly removed. We will continue to inspect the Dene.”
