Sept. 19--A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy in a helicopter shot at a man who allegedly carjacked a motorist and drove the wrong way on the 215 Freeway in San Bernardino, striking other vehicles.
The man jumped from the moving vehicle and the car crashed head-on into an oncoming car, said sheriff's Deputy Deon Filer. The unidentified man died at the scene.
Deputies say they don't know whether the man was wounded by gunfire or hurt when he jumped from the vehicle.
All northbound lanes of the 215 are closed. The closure also caused traffic congestion on the 210 Freeway.
About noon, deputies began pursuing the driver, who was traveling the wrong way on the northbound 215.
The driver sideswiped a vehicle during the pursuit, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
At least two people were transported to area hospitals, the Press Enterprise newspaper reported. A handcuffed body was seen lying on the freeway's right shoulder.
It was unclear when the freeway would reopen.
