Deputy head put in charge at primary school at centre of safeguarding allegations

The deputy head teacher of a primary school has been put in charge after allegations surrounding a breach of safeguarding policy.

Jason Hollywood, head of Northwood Primary School in Kirkby since 2014, has not been seen in the school for more than a week according to parents.

The ECHO understands the allegations relate to a background check involving someone working in the school - although it is not known whether this was a permanent employee or a contractor.

A letter sent home to parents today and signed by the deputy headteacher and head of governors reads: "I have become aware of some comments posted on social media about the school and members of staff.

"I understand this has caused concern amongst parents and carers which is regrettable.

"I would like to assure all parents and carers that the safety and wellbeing of the children within our care us our utmost priority and the school has undertaken all of the necessary employment checks prior to staff commencing work with us.

"All allegations regarding safeguarding matters are taken seriously and we will take appropriate action if necessary.

"During this time, the management of the school is being led by Sarah Murphy, deputy head teacher, and if you do have any specific concerns you wish to raise, please contact the school office in the first instance."

Sources told the ECHO: "Everyone is really worried, a lot of parents are talking about not taking their children to school tomorrow."

Married dad-of-two Mr Hollywood was head of Hillside Primary School in Wirral before joining Northwood, after spells teaching English in Laos and Thailand.

He has also been deputy head teacher of St Cleopas in Toxteth .

According to Northwood's website: "From 2007, back in the UK, he worked supporting struggling schools and became a deputy again before moving into headship in 2009.

"He loves leadership and developing others to be their best in a profession he wants to be world class.

"Mr Hollywood loves to cycle, climb mountains and read Ben Elton books."

When the ECHO contacted the school a reporter was referred to Knowsley Council's communications department.

A spokeswoman for the council, on behalf of the school, said: "We do not comment on the circumstances of individual cases."
