Deputy FM John Swinney to hold Covid briefing today as Edinburgh cases continue to surge

Deputy First Minister John Swinney is set to give an update to Holyrood this afternoon as concerns arise amidst the coronavirus pandemic still having a hold on Scotland.

Mr Swinney, who is also Covid Recovery Minister for Scotland, will address Parliament at approximately 2:20pm today, and the main focus of his speech is likely to be the surge of positive Covid cases across the country recently.

This update is set to come as residents of Edinburgh were urged to get their children vaccinated, as data shows that over 70 kids were hospitalised with the virus most recently.

Data collected by Edinburgh Live has shown that from April 19 until October 19, 2021, 75 children admitted to hospital had a first positive PCR test for Covid during their admission or in the 14 days preceding it.

NHS Lothian has seen the third highest number of total cases since the start of the pandemic in Scotland, with over 100,000 officially recorded.

Since then, the vaccine roll-out has seen hospital admissions and deaths slow and fall, however many young people in the area are still to receive both doses.
