CHANDIGARH: Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Friday-Saturday night conducted a surprise checking of state police nakas along the India-Pakistan border in Amritsar, Batala and Gurdaspur districts.
Randhawa, who also heads the home department, took stock of the ground situation at Jagdev Khurd, Gagomahal, Dariya Moosa, Singpura, Ghonewala bridge and Dera Baba Nanak, and directed police to remain vigilant. He added any laxity with regard to security and law and order would not be tolerated and dereliction of duty in this matter would be strictly dealt with. Randhawa was accompanied by IG border range Mohnish Chawla, SSP Amritsar (rural) Rakesh Kaushal and Batala SSP Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar.
Randhawa said Punjab Police was capable of safeguarding the state and the country’s sovereignty. He described Centre’s move to expand the jursidiction of the Border Security Force in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam as “nefarious”, saying it would weaken the states’ police forces. He said he would not be allowed to succeed.
Randhawa said some anti-social elements with narrow interests were spreading baseless rumours about law and order along the border of Punjab.
