Deptford fire: Firefighters battle huge blaze at block of flats in south-east London

Firefighters battled a huge blaze which at a block of flats in south-east London.

Huge plumes of smoke were pictured rising from the building in Deptford on Wednesday evening.

London Fire Brigade said twelve fire engines were called to the block of flats in Childers Street at 7.26pm.

A flat on the sixth floor and part of the roof was alight.

Video footage on social media shows smoke billowing from the top of the building.

Footage also showed firefighters tackling the fire in an aerial device.

The fire brigade said the control room took 34 calls to the fire.

One witness posted on Twitter: "Just went for an evening walk with my kids and witnessed a fire block on flames in Deptford, South East London.

"Another block of flats on fire in London. Praying all the occupants are safe."

Fire crews from Deptford, New Cross, Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Lewisham and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The blaze has since been brought under control after the building was evacuated, the brigade said.
