We probably should have seen this coming. ICE has a daily arrest target of 3,000 people per day, as set by Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem. This means individual agents are under pressure to snatch as many people as they can on the flimsiest of pretences, inevitably meaning many hundreds (thousands?) of people have been dragged into an endless nightmare for no reason whatsoever.
It was clear that ICE was always going to run out of their usual prey and would need to look elsewhere to hit their targets. But, cards on the table, we didn’t expect to see them coming after the cops!
Old Orchard Beach Police Department Reserve Officer Jon Luke Evans is of Jamaican origin but legally authorized to work in the U.S. Police Chief Elise Chard even double-checked this with federal officials, receiving full approval from the Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify program.
Everything was set for Evans to begin serving his community, that is, until he attempted to purchase a firearm for use in his role as a police officer. This triggered an alert to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents, who tipped off ICE, who quickly snatched him up. Presumably to avoid further humiliation at ICE’s hands, Evans has agreed to voluntary deportation and will soon be returning to Jamaica.
ICE vs Cops
But, incredibly, ICE seems determined to pick a fight with the cops. ICE ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said:
“The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien and unlawfully issue him a firearm while on duty would be comical if it weren’t so tragic. We have a police department that was knowingly breaking the very law they are charged with enforcing in order to employ an illegal alien. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing criminal alien threats from our New England communities.”
Police Chief Chard is stunned, particularly as she’d followed federal procedure to the letter and explicitly gotten approval for Evans to work for them from the same Department of Homeland Security that’s now demonizing them as incompetent.
But, let’s face it, ICE isn’t going to slow down. When they run out of “illegals” to arrest, they’ll simply invent some. Who knows, maybe that’s going to be your friends, neighbors, co-workers or heck, you and your family. Sure, you might feel like you have an absolute legal right to be in the country, but ICE doesn’t care much about pesky little things like facts and evidence. They have quotas to fill!
