Department of Health issues statement over 'fake letters' about 'confirmed' coronavirus case

A letter circulating online appearing to confirm Ireland's second case of coronavirus is fake, health chiefs have said.

The Department of Health has issued a statement debunking the hoax letters which are doing the rounds on social media.

The department also confirmed that there is still only one case of Covid-19 in the country.

It tweeted: "We are aware of fake letters circulating regarding confirmed case of #Covid19 .

"There is one confirmed case of covid-19 in Ireland. If further confirmed cases arise, Dept. of Health will notify the public.

"Please be wary of misinformation."

Ireland's first case was confirmed on Saturday evening after a schoolboy from Scoil Chaitriona on Mobhi Road, North Dublin contracted the disease.

The school has been shut for 14 days in a bid to prevent the virus from spreading.

The affected pupil is in quarantine at a Dublin hospital while all students at the school are being told to self-isolate for the two week incubation period.

Over 90,000 people worldwide have contracted the disease which has killed more than 3,000.
