Departing Newcastle United defender thanks Magpies after opting against new contract

Newcastle United defender Lewis Cass has departed the club to join newly promoted League One side Port Vale. The North Shields lad spent a successful loan spell at Vale Park last term but despite being offered an extended deal at United he has made the tough decision to leave the Magpies.

Cass featured in numerous first-team squads but did play in any competition above the EFL Trophy. Cass said: "I would like to thank everyone associated with during my last 10 years at this great club. 2From the players in the changing room to the staff around the building thank you for making my time there special. Time for a new challenge."

A United statement read: "Cass was named on the Magpies' first-team bench in a 4-0 away win at Fulham on the final day of the 2018/19 Premier League season as well as Newcastle's FA Cup third round draw at Rochdale in January 2020.

"Everybody at the club would like to wish Lewis the best of luck for the future."
