Deontay Wilder’s team claim he will want a third fight with Tyson Fury.
Wilder’s five-year reign as WBC heavyweight champion was ended by Fury and he suffered his first pro loss to the Gypsy King.
The Bronze Bomber has 30 days to trigger a rematch clause in the fight contract for a third fight before June with a 60-40 purse split in favour of Fury.
Wilder did not attend the post-fight press conference because he went to hospital but his head trainer and co-manager Jay Deas says he will want to face Fury again.
“I think so absolutely,” he said. “Knowing him like I do, he will want to rematch. These guys have put on two tremendous fights already so I certainly think the public will want it.
“We’ll want it, they’ll want it. It seems natural. I think it’s what you’ll see happen.”
Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight in the seventh round when Deas’ assistant Mark Breland threw in the towel against his and Wilder’s wishes. Deas says he plans to speak to him.
“I’m the head coach, but we do things a little bit differently, like an American football team where the coach doesn’t always call the plays,” he said.
“Ours is like that. Mark said something about throwing the towel in during the rounds and I said ‘don’t do that’. Then I saw the towel go in.
“I’ll have a talk with Mark about that. I didn’t think he should have done that. Deontay is the kind of guy who wants to go out on his shield. He would tell you straight up, don’t throw the towel in.
“You must remember Deontay Wilder is a fearsome puncher, so he has that big shot. He can always land that shot to turn things around.”
Wilder needed a couple of stitches to his left ear, cut by Fury’s right hook which floored him in the third round.
“He has a small cut inside the ear,” said Deas. “It may have affected his equilibrium. So he’ll just get a couple of stitches there.
“Deontay is doing well and he’ll be back and all the better for this.”
Speaking in the ring after the fight, Wilder said he wanted to fight on.
“The best man won tonight, but my corner threw in the towel,” he said. “I was ready to go out on my shield.
“I had a lot of things going on heading into this fight. It is what it is, but I make no excuses tonight. I just wish my corner would have let me go out on my shield. We’ll come back stronger next time around.”
