Deontay Wilder's trainer Jay Deas claims it was not his decision to throw in the towel during the Bronze Bomber's defeat to Tyson Fury.
The 31-year-old Briton twice knocked down the reigning champion before finally claiming victory in the seventh round when the American's corner waved the white flag.
Wilder was incensed with the decision and wanted to fight on, and it has emerged it was coach Mark Breland - not Deas - who threw in the towel.
Deas said: “Mark Breland threw in the towel, I didnt think he should have.
“Deontay is a go out on his shield kind of guy.
“He did not want that, Deontay is a fearsome puncher and he does always have that shot to land a big shot and turn things around.
“Deontay is doing well and he’ll be back and all the better for it. But congratulations to Tyson and his team.”
He added: “The head coach doesn’t always call the play.
“Mark said something about throwing the towel in and I said don’t do that. The fight went a little longer and I saw the towel go in.
“I haven’t seen Mark to talk about it but we will talk about it.”
Wilder was angry with his corner for failing to let him "go out on his shield".
He said: "The best man won on the night. My coach threw in the towel but I'm ready to go out on my shield.
"I had a lot of things go on coming into this fight but it is what it is.
"I just wish my corner would have let me go out on my shield, I'm a warrior. But he [Fury] did what he did and there's no excuses.
"I will come back and be stronger the next time around.
"This is what big time boxing is all about, the best must fight the best. I appreciate all the fans that came out tonight and supported the show."
