Denzel Dumfries opens door for Man Utd transfer with cryptic response to question

Denzel Dumfries has underlined his happiness with Inter Milan but has not totally ruled out a move away amid fresh links with Manchester United.

The Dutch full-back has been a long-term target of the Red Devils, with their interest stretching back to his time with former club PSV Eindhoven. Italian giants Inter Milan swooped in to secure his services but that has not dampened talk over his future.

Amid Erik ten Hag’s demands for a huge rebuild at Old Trafford, Dumfries has once again emerged as a target. Inter could also be forced to sell in order to balance the books at the San Siro.

He has now spoken out on his immediate future with his current employers. The defender has underlined his happiness with the beaten Champions League finalists but did hint that a move could potentially be on the cards at some point in the future.

Speaking during a press conference whilst on international duty with the Dutch side, Dumfries said: “I’m very proud to play for this team. These last two years have been fantastic, and I’ve very proud whenever I’m driving to Appiano [Inter’s training ground].

“However, modern football is very dynamic. Players come and go.”

Whilst he did admit that his future his far from certain, the 27-year-old also made a point of reiterating his happiness in Milan. He added: “I have no reason to leave.

“I love Inter,” Dumfries continued. “But as I said before, you have to wait and see what happens. However, I’m very happy to play for Inter.”

Since moving to Inter for a fee of €14million (£11.9m), Dumfries has gone on to make 96 appearances in all competitions for the Italian side. In that time, he has scored seven and notched 14 assists from right-back.

He also played a key role as Inter lifted back-to-back Coppa Italia titles under current boss Simone Inzaghi. Dumfries currently has two years left to serve on his contract at the San Siro.

Should he move to Old Trafford in the immediate future then his countryman Ten Hag has a tricky decision to make when it comes to his defence. Initially after arriving at Old Trafford, Diogo Dalot was favoured for the right-back berth.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance after the Portuguese right-back picked up an injury, whilst the two competed for the position during the closing months of the 2022/23 campaign.

Wan-Bissaka has just a year left on his contract at Old Trafford so seems the most likely to be sold - the English defender linked with a return to former club Crystal Palace. Dalot in the meantime has only just put pen to paper on a new deal with the Red Devils that extends his stay until the summer of 2028.
