Former NFL wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who helped the Denver Broncos win Super Bowl 50, has died aged 33.

The Roswell Police Department, in the US state of Georgia, said Thomas was found dead at his home.

A department spokesperson said preliminary information indicated Thomas's death "stems from a medical issue" and investigators "currently have no reason to believe otherwise".

Thomas played in the NFL between 2010 and 2019.

After a college career with Georgia Tech, Thomas was recruited by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 draft.

He made his NFL debut later that year and stayed with the Broncos before being traded to the Houston Texans during the 2018 season.

Thomas made seven appearances for the Texans, while also playing for the New York Jets in 2019.

He announced his NFL retirement last June.

The highlight of his playing days in the NFL was winning the Super Bowl for the 2015 season when the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10.

Thomas also played a pivotal role in the Broncos winning two American Football Conference (AFC) Championships and five AFC West titles.

He also earned multiple Pro Bowl selections during his career in which he caught 724 passes for 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns.

Tributes have flowed for Thomas, who was to turn 34 on Christmas Day.

The Broncos released a statement, saying they were "devastated and completely heartbroken" by Thomas's death.

"Demaryius's humility, warmth, kindness and infectious smile will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him," the statement read.

"Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the Thomas family and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss."

The Broncos also took to Twitter — as did Georgia Tech — to pay their respects.

Former Broncos teammate DeMarcus Ware and Seattle Seahawks' Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson each said they were "heartbroken".

Retired NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall also warmly remembered Thomas.
