Dentist Perkins Pong is fighting to stop his practice being flooded after heavy rain

A dentist has told how he spent the night trying to stop sewage from flooding into his dental practice in Oldham after the drains outside buckled under the strain of heavy rainfall.

Perkins Pong, who runs Firwood Dental Practice on Middleton Road in Chadderton, says water levels have been rising since around 10pm last night and have now reached six to seven inches.

He is using sandbags to try and protect the building, and mopping up any water or sewage that manages to seep through.

"The continuous rain - the drains can't take it," Mr Pong said.

"The water is higher in the back garden because the level of the ground is lower, and water is seeping into the building."

Mr Pong says that sewage is coming up through a manhole outside as a result of the blocked drains, and was told by United Utilities it could be Monday night before someone is able to come and fix the problem.

But United Utilities said that was a 'worst case' scenario - and that they hope to have someone with him in the next few hours.

They say engineers will also help with the clear up.

Mr Pong said: "There's toilet paper floating around and it smells awful, I've been having to mop it up."

"I can't call the fire service to pump it away unless the water is causing problems to the electrics inside which at the moment it isn't."

This is the second time this month that Mr Pong's practice has been hit by flooding.

He had to buy the sandbags earlier in October following more heavy rainfall.

"I'll be here all day trying to stop the water," he added.

"I'm hoping the rain will stop later today and the water will slowly lower again."
