Dentist issues warning over common tooth brushing mistake

A dentist has issued a warning against a common tooth brushing mistake.

Anna Peterson shared a video on TikTok to say people should avoid brushing their teeth immediately after breakfast.

The hygiene expert claims doing this can have long-term damage on the health of your teeth.

She said: "When you eat breakfast, your mouth becomes acidic.

"So what you're doing when you brush your teeth after breakfast is brushing the acid into the tooth, and this wears away the enamel."

It's a common question amongst people about whether they should brush before or after the first meal of the day.

But the tooth whitening expert made it clear where she stands on the debate.

She added: "Brushing before breakfast protects your teeth from anything you're going to eat."

The video has since been viewed more than 2.7 million times and the advice has clearly struck a chord amongst the dentist's followers.

Gemma said: "As a dental nurse, it's amazing how many people have never realised that this is the better way of doing it."

Wilf commented: "I've always told people this but seemed like I was the only one."

Cecille posted: "So I have been doing it wrong all my life."

However, other people still argued that brushing your teeth after breakfast was the better way.

Xander said: "But I want to taste my food, not peppermint flavoured eggs."

Another user added: "So what about that food which will stay in your teeth and cause more problems later?"

The dentist clarified there was a way that those people could brush their teeth after breakfast, but they will just need to be a little patient.

She said: "Waiting 30 minutes and then brushing would be fine to do."
