Dennistoun mum finds adorable homeless hamster living with her guinea pigs

A Dennistoun resident has had a surprise house guest in the form of an adorable wee hamster.

Denise Law was shocked to discover a hamster living with her two guinea pigs on Wednesday, weeks after she heard rustling in her pet's food bags.

The mum-of-seven was convinced the noises were coming from a mouse and even set down humane traps to get to the bottom of the mystery. But days later, Hammy was caught hanging out in the guinea pig's cage having breakfast.

Denise has no idea how the hamster got into their home but suspects that it could've waltzed straight through the front door.

She explained: "It could've come in the front door because children don't close doors.

"I had rustling in the guinea pig food bags early hours of the morning back at the beginning of May so went to B&Q and got three humane traps but over the weeks' nothing was caught and I had placed the food into an airtight container.

"The noises stopped so didn't think any more of it until yesterday when my six-year-old started shouting that there was a mouse in the cage with the guinea pigs.

"I checked but there was nothing there, but when I came back, Hammy walked up the hallway like a boss. He saw me and bolted into the cupboard but I managed to catch it and get it in a cage from Pets At Home. The guinea pigs were feeding it and sharing their water for a week.

"I think it's either been mistaken for dead and gone into hibernation and woke up or it got loose a while ago and became the forgotten pet.

"How such a small animal survived so long in a madhouse with seven noisy children and live to tell the tale I have no idea!"

Denise has appealed on social media for anyone who recognises the hamster to get in touch but so far hasn't been able to trace its owner.

So for now, Hammy has gone to live with a family friend who's offered to give it another, more permanent home.
