Dennis Waterman spent final years after New Tricks in semi retirement in Spain

Famous actor Dennis Waterman, known for his role in New Tricks, spent his retirement lazing around in the Spanish sun before his death as The Mirror reports. Dennis died on Sunday, May, 8 as his family confirmed in a statement.

The former Minder star died with his wife Pam by his side, the statement said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis passed away very peacefully in hospital in Spain. The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Before his death, Dennis told The Mirror that after New Tricks he had moved to a smaller home in Spain and was not actively looking for work. He said: “I’m not rushing about looking for work really – I’ll see how far the money goes."

He added that he surprised himself at how well he took to enjoying early retirement: "I’ve found out a remarkable thing about myself is that I’m really, really good at doing f***-all. I’ve always sneered at people who have gone in to early retirement and thought what are you going to do, but I’ve taken to it like a duck to water.”

Alongside his role of DS Gerry Standing in New Tricks Dennis was also known for The Sweeney and Minder. He had acted for over 60 years, first gaining roles as a child and following this success into adulthood.

His last on-screen appearance was in the Australian comedy film, Never Too Late, which aired in 2020. Dennis had married four times and has a famous daughter Hannah Waterman who played Laura Beale in the BBC soap EastEnders.

He had been married to Pam Flint since 2011 and the couple had no children together.
