In confirmation of widely expected news, veteran guard Dennis Schröder will not return to the Houston Rockets in the 2022-23 NBA season. Schröder signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year contract, as first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Now 29 years old, Schröder was essentially a salary fill-in as part of the trade that sent Daniel Theis (and his contract) to Boston last February. In 15 games with the Rockets from that point forward, Schröder averaged 10.9 points and 5.9 assists in 26.9 minutes, playing largely as the primary backup to Kevin Porter Jr. at point guard.
While still productive, Schröder’s age was never quite in alignment with the young and rebuilding Rockets. The writing was clearly on the wall when the Rockets used a first-round draft pick in June on TyTy Washington, who will compete in training camp with second-year prospect Daishen Nix to be Porter’s main backup this season.
Schröder’s veteran status is much more in alignment with LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the majority of the Lakers, which is where he previously played during the 2020-21 campaign.
