Dennis Hogan reiterates desire to fight in Ireland after beating Sam Eggington to become world champion

Dennis Hogan has reiterated his desire to fight in Ireland after beating Sam Eggington to become a world champion.

The Kildare native defeated England's Eggington in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday to claim the IBO super welterweight world title after the bout went the distance.

Hogan's victory came via majority decision after the judges scored the bout 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114.

Hogan has been linked with a bout against Cork's Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan and is hopeful a fight between them could take place on Irish soil - possibly on the same card as Katie Taylor's Croke Park homecoming bout against Amanda Serrano if that event goes ahead next year.

Speaking to Australian media after Saturday's fight, he said: "I'll have a defence back in Ireland, we’ll chat about a defence against someone from Ireland.

"Then after that, you’re either all in or you’re nothing and after that you just go after more belts.

“Keep going till I lose, really."

Prior to the victory, Hogan told this publication that he would love to face O'Sullivan in an all-Irish showdown at GAA Headquarters ahead of Taylor's rematch with Serrano.

He explained: "Spike O'Sullivan has called for a fight with the winner of this one. Me and Spike are very respectful to each other, we get on very well and send messages of support to each other.

"He called out the winner of this and he also said if Boxxer had of won that purse bid for Eggington, he was going to fight on the undercard to call out the winner after the fight so he's there ready to go.

"There's a fight there ready to be made if Eddie [Hearn] wanted to do it in Croke Park if Katie gets her fight there.

"I think it has to happen. Ireland deserve it for all the years without having much boxing there. For Spike and myself to have a homecoming after 12 years would be great. I think it has to happen so fingers crossed everything goes to plan and we can do it."
