Dennis Bergkamp pinpoints the exact moment where Arsenal started to decline under Arsene Wenger

Dennis Bergkamp has pinpointed the tactical change that resulted in Arsenal’s decline under Arsene Wenger.

The Dutchman was part of the Gunners’ glittering period during the late 1990s and early 2000s, which saw them win three Premier League titles and become Manchester United’s main rivals during their period of dominance.

During this time, Wenger set his side up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, with Bergkamp operating as a number 10 behind Nicolas Anelka and then Thierry Henry.

The system worked to a tee, with Bergkamp forming deadly partnerships with both players, particularly Henry.

But, following the ‘invincibles’ season of 2003/04, the team started to break up, and Wenger deviated from his tried and trusted system.

He opted instead to operate with a lone striker, and add an extra body to his midfield – a move Bergkamp believes contributed to the Gunners’ lack of trophies following his departure in 2006.

Having won the FA Cup in 2005, it wouldn’t be until 2014 that Arsenal won another trophy.

Asked by his former team-mate Martin Keown why the second half of Wenger’s tenure was less successful, Bergkamp responded: “Arsene started experimenting.

“Arsenal after 2006, there was too much midfield play. There were no players going into attack, and only one striker who was lonely.”

Keown agreed with his former teammate, explaining that Wenger adapted Bergkamp’s role in order to suit Cesc Fabregas.

He added: "With five in midfield. Instead of having you there, he had Cesc Fabregas. You would start high then drift into midfield.

"Then Wenger reversed it. Then the player started deep and went high, as Fabregas did.

"Many years later, I spoke with a big-name winger at Arsenal. I asked him: ‘Why do you always stay wide?’

"Play with freedom. Be instinctive. That’s what the boss wants."
