(Picture: via REUTERS)Denmark is to reintroduce its coronavirus passport amid rising case numbers in the Nordic country.
Parliament is preparing to designate the virus a “critical threat to society” just two months after almost all of Covid-19 restrictions were dropped, on September 10.
It comes amid growing concerns about the pandemic’s resurgence in Europe as winter arrives.
The Covid passport will be reintroduced in indoor bars and restaurants, as well as nightclubs. The digital “corona pass” indicates whether a person has been vaccinated, has had a recent negative test, or has recently recovered from Covid.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said: “You can live with the corona-pass. It gives you peace of mind when you go to the cinema or to a concert.”
The measures, presented by the Danish Government, which are subject to parliamentary approval, will also require the pass to be presented for indoor gatherings over 200, such as in cinemas and museums.
In a news conference on Monday, PM Frederiksen also called upon Danes who had not been vaccinated to get their jabs, or risk “destroying it for the rest”.
She said: “It can’t be said clearly enough: those of you who have not been vaccinated, do so . . . The government stands on the side of the 90 per cent or so that does what one should do. The others should not destroy it for the rest.”
It is a sharp U-turn from late August, when the Danish Government announced it had the pandemic “under control”.
But the country’s number of daily infections has risen steadily to around 2,300 in recent days from a low of just over 200 in mid-September.
Denmark was one of the first European countries to react to the developing pandemic in March last year when it closed its borders.
