Denmark's Andreas Christensen insists that he wants to stay at Chelsea next season

Denmark defender Andreas Christensen insists he wants to stay at Chelsea next season.

The 23-year-old found Premier League starts hard to come by with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger ahead of him.

But Rudiger’s season-ending knee injury in April afforded Christensen a run of top flight games and he yet could start next season as first-choice.

Christensen was a regular in the Europa League and got his hands on the trophy last week with Chelsea steamrolling arch rivals Arsenal in a one-sided final.

In the mix to face Ireland on Friday, Christensen made just 29 appearances in all competitions this season compared to 40 last season.

But he told Danish media yesterday: “Of course I’d like to have played more but it’s an acceptable number of matches.

“The second-half of the season has been good for me.  I got a little more Premier League matches in the end, so I’m happy with that part of the season.”

Christensen continued: “It’s been up and down with playing time but it was cool to finish with a trophy in your hands - I felt a big part of that.”

The future of Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri remains undecided but Christensen wants to stay even though he wasn’t first-choice under the Italian.

“I’ve realised I love London, and I think the club are happy with me. If I keep working hard and play like I did in the Europa League, I’m sure it’ll be positive.

“It doesn’t matter who the manager is, I know I have to be one of the best in training and in matches.”
