Denmark legend Peter Schmeichel: I have seen Ireland play and they are so bad

Denmark legend Peter Schmeichel has written off Ireland’s Euro qualification prospects.

The former Manchester United custodian was at the Parken Stadium on Saturday to watch his son Kasper earn the man-of-the-match award in the 1-0 win over Switzerland.

Denmark, Switzerland and Ireland are locked in a three-way battle to claim the two qualifying spots from Group C for next year’s Euro finals.

Ireland must win one of their final two matches against their rivals over the next month but Schmeichel senior predicts Mick McCarthy’s side to miss out.

He had consoling words for Swiss stopper Yann Sommer after the match, contending they will bounce back by beating Ireland in Geneva tomorrow.

“Switzerland will win against Ireland,” said the Great Dane.

“I have seen Ireland play and they are so bad. Switzerland can take a lot of positives from their performance in Copenhagen.

“They have some really talented players. If they play like that against Ireland, the win will come.

“Kasper had a great game on Saturday but overall the Denmark team didn’t. Football can be difficult to understand sometimes.”

Likewise, Denmark boss Åge Hareide’s cannot see Switzerland slipping up in their final three games.

“I think Switzerland will win the group,” he said after inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on them. “Conceding those late goals can become a mental thing.

“That seems to be playing on their minds but they have quality players. I expect them to qualify from our group.”
