Denman school hosts virtual pet show to lift spirits in lockdown

COREY the trampolining goat was one of the standouts from St Joseph's Primary School at Denman's virtual pet show this week.

Principal Helen Whale said the event was held via Zoom to help lift spirits during lockdown.

"We had a great array, it was just fabulous," she said.

"We had a calf that was one day old; a dairy cow; a couple of horses, one of which was a Clydesdale that was very impressive; we had one dressed up as [Olympic equestrian rider] Andrew Hoy; a goat that jumped on the trampoline and was amazing; we had two Russian Blue cats so they're a lovely sleek looking animal; and a great array of dogs and cats."

The school gave three prizes in each of its three stages, for the best dressed pet, most unusual pet and best pet fun fact.

Year six student and cat owner Alyssa shared that when a pet cat died in Ancient Egypt, family members would shave off their eyebrows in mourning.

Student Caoimhe dressed as Spiderman and her dog as Batman.

"Last year we noticed the kids became pretty disconnected, and their parents, and we wanted to have a way really quickly to bring them all together again and have some fun," Ms Whale said.

"I could remember when pet shows were a common thing either in school or at our local agricultural show, kids always flocked to the pet show.

"We [staff] were talking about that and saying what a pity it was we don't have them anymore at school because of rules and regulations and then we thought 'Lockdown is a perfect time to have a pet show, because we don't have the pets at school'. The kids were really excited and pleased to be able to do it."
