Denise Welch slams Piers Morgan as he labels her 'a professional victim' in spat about mental health

They are both known for not holding back with their opinions and Denise Welch and Piers Morgan have been embroiled in a massive social media spat about mental health.

It all stemmed from a segment on Friday's Good Morning Britain on ITV , which Piers co-hosts with Susanna Reid, about young people's struggle with mental health.

He told mental health campaigner Danny Bowman: "I think we need to teach mental strength and we need to teach kids to toughen up a bit ... life is actually about the real world."

Quoting a clip of the show, Denise , who has been open and frank about Denise Welch says recent bout of depression left her unable to get out of bed took to Twitter to rant: "I am totally and utterly appalled that Piers Morgan actually said this on live television!! Toughen up??? How f.....g dare he."

But it was Piers' reply to the former Coronation Street and Waterloo Road actress that sparked the most fury amongst her and her followers.

He responded: "Hi Denise, I think professional ‘victims’ like you are now part of the problem not the solution.

"I want our children to be taught mental strength & resilience at school, to better acquit them for life than listening to celebrities constantly whining about their myriad woes."

Denise then told her followers that Piers had blocked her on Twitter, posting a screenshot of the blocking with the words: "But of course this is what happens when you question Piers Morgan about his views on mental health issues."

Then, in true Piers style, the journalist and presenter fired back: "I blocked you because you’re always abusing me in a shockingly unpleasant manner - which is rather ironic given how concerned you purport to be about the effect of abuse on mental health."

Understandably still angry and upset at the impact Piers branding her 'a professional victim' could have on others struggling out there, Denise then made a series of points about mental health on Saturday, posting: "I have spent 30 yrs speaking out about the stigma surrounding depression. Trying to be a voice for those who can’t find theirs.

"A person suffering crippling depression who may be about to reach out and speak about it, hears views like ‘toughen up’ & ‘stop whining’

"... can be the trigger to silence them for ever. I have shared my own story of debilitating episodes of this terrifying, isolating illness.

"...in an attempt to help other people feel they are not alone. And this is what Piers Morgan calls me."
