Denise Welch says she had no pain relief in 42 hour labour with The 1975's Matt Healy

Denise Welch has revealed that she was forced to go without pain relief during her 42 hour labour with Matt Healy.

The Waterloo Road actress, 61, was speaking on Loose Women about the news that the government is launching an investigation into claims that women are being denied epidurals during childbirth.

She said her experience with her first child Matt, the lead singer of The 1975, was "horrendous".

Denise confessed: "I was screaming 'hit me over the head with a spiked mallet'; I had a 42 hour labour and not even any gas and air.

"They kept saying 'But you're nearly at the end of your first day, nearly at the end of it' even when I was trying to watch Dynasty and my waters broke.

She then admitted that when she had her next child, Louis, now 19, she decided to have a caesarean.

Denise added: "Not because I was too posh to push, far from it, but I needed the experience to be completely different because it was 12 years later."

The mum-of-two previously revealed that The 1975's song She Lays Down is about her postnatal depression hell.

Denise called her labour 'hilarious' (ITV)

He wrote the track to describe his mum's turmoil and how she resorted to using  cocaine.

It contains personal lyrics such as: "She chose cocaine / But it couldn't fix her brain.”

And: "She's appalled by not loving me at all."
