Denise Welch says alcohol 'ruined her life for 15 years' prior to her sobriety

Denise Welch says alcohol "ruined [her] life for 15 years."

The Loose Women panellist and former Corrie actress, 62, has been sober now for eight years - but not after alcoholism took its toll on her life.

Taking to social media, she opened up about her struggle with booze and how it can impact life, relationships and mental health.

Denise tweeted: "Alcohol is the most dangerous drug because it's legal.

"Violence is fuelled by it. In most domestic abuse incidents alcohol is a major contributor.

"It is a major cause of anxiety & depression and yet we celebrate it everywhere.

"It ruined my life for 15 yrs."

Back in April, she marked eight years off the bottle.

"Today," she proudly told fans, "April 18th, I am celebrating being eight years sober, and I just want to thank everybody who has supported me on this journey."

Denise went on to credit loving husband Lincoln for helping her to reach the milestone - who got sober with her.

"If it wasn't for my husband Lincoln who got sober with me, I don't know where I would be.

"If any of you are in the early stages or wherever you are in your sobriety journey, I just want to say it will be the best thing you have ever done.

"And for me, it hasn't just changed my life, but it has changed the lives of all the people who love me, and, indeed, my friends."

She previously told the Mirror that what she's gained from sobriety means she's never tempted to start drinking again.

"I don't have temptation any more because of what sobriety has given us," she revealed, "Our careers and our families.

"That is so much more important.
