Denise Lewis says Masked Dancer appearance was on bucket list for milestone 50th birthday

Surely everyone wants to dance dressed as a sea slug before they turn 50?

Well, former Olympic athlete Denise Lewis did, anyway – she took part in The Masked Dancer to tick an item off her bucket list as she reached her milestone birthday.

And the star, who celebrated her big five-oh in August, also trained in flower arranging and hairdressing.

"Not really glamorous things," she laughs. "Flower arranging – I've actually done that with a company called Love Flowers. And I managed to rope in a friend of mine who let me sort her greys and cut her hair. We're still speaking".

Denise explained: "Doing The Masked Dancer was one of them [things on my list]. And now I'm part of the Sea Slug Appreciation Society."

Denise was correctly identified by the ITV panel. As a heptathlete, she wonders why she was given that costume – but admits she quickly became fond of it.

"I'm not sluggish," she laughs. "I did actually look up sea slugs and they are amazingly colourful. They’ve got all these iridescent and gorgeous colours. I embraced the sluggishness."

Denise added that she felt a "real trepidation" about putting on the "huge head" as she is a little "claustrophobic," joking: "I must have looked like a Godzilla but I loved it. It was such a great thing to do."

She was unmasked in the semi-final of the ITV show on Saturday night alongside performer Kimberley Walsh, who was behind the Odd Socks costume on the latest series.

The Masked Dancer continues with its final from 6.30pm on Saturday (October 22) on ITV and ITV Hub. Catch up on previous episodes of the show now via ITV Hub.
