I have never read any of David Walliams’ books before and I’m not really sure why, but lots of my friends had told me to read them because they liked them too. I was lucky to receive a copy of Demon Dentist from Guardian Children’s Books and I really liked it mainly because it was funny and it had a good main character called Alfie.
Alfie has had quite a hard life and he lives with his Dad, but his Dad is poorly and finds it hard to look after Alfie, so Alfie basically looks after them both. Until Winnie the social worker gets involved.

Alfie has missed lots of dentist appointments and she makes him go to the dentist. But this is not an ordinary dentist - Miss Root is an evil dentist and she pulls out children’s teeth.
Then there are weird things being found under children’s pillows when they leave their tooth for the tooth fairy. Like eyeballs and cat poo! With help from Raj, Alfie and him plan a way to find out who’s leaving these nasty presents.
Eventually Gabz (Alfie’s best friend – not his girlfriend) and Alfie capture the evil Miss Root and with help from Alfie’s Dad, they get rid of her for good.
The ending is quite sad, but it gets happier and Alfie is looked after by Raj and Winnie.
