Demolition works on Finglas' Church of Annunciation are in full swing

The demolition of the historic Church of Annunciation in Finglas is in full swing.

The church first opened in 1967 and is being destroyed after a 54 year run.

The church had a capacity for 3,500 people, one of the biggest in Ireland.

Planning permission to knock down the building was approved in February 2020 due to falling attendances and structural problems.

The 3,100 square metre building will be replaced by a smaller church with capacity for around 350 people.

Work to demolish the church began in August this year and pictures taken by Marcus Cleary show the destruction in progress.

In a local Facebook group, many expressed sadness at seeing the church go.

One said: "Such a shame, a beautiful building. Some work went into that building, a beautiful church."

Another wrote: "Sad to see it go. End of an era."

One joked: "That was a long aisle to walk down to say "'I do."
