Demolition underway as brand new €26million Cultural Quarter being built in Swords

Demolition has begun in Swords as a brand new €26 million Cultural Quarter is being built.

The National Monuments Service agreed to knock the derelict buildings on North Street with Fingal County Council setting a completion date of mid-2024 for the Swords Cultural Square to be built.

This project will see a new civic plaza built against the backdrop of beautiful Swords Castle - an instant tourist attraction for anyone coming to the capital.

Speaking about the building, Councillor Joe Newman said: “While it is always sad to see old buildings demolished, this work will facilitate the creation of a space and a public realm.

“This public realm will link Swords Castle to the new library and theatre and generate more activity at the north end of Swords - including tourism.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and applaud the council for having the foresight and determination to progress this project.

“I will continue to offer my support for this development on behalf of the people of Swords.”

A project management team is expected to be appointed at the end of 2019 with the aim of securing final planning by the end of 2020.
