Demolition under way at historic Nottinghamshire pub

Work is well underway to demolish a former pub which had links to the Lord of the Rings author J. R. R. Tolkien.

The Phoenix, in Shelford Road, Gedling, is being razed to the ground to make way for new apartments after standing empty for nearly two years.

The pub closed down in 2019 after former owners Ei Publication Partnerships failed to find new tenants and was put up for sale.

Hockley Developments is behind the scheme for a three-storey block of 26 apartments, which was given the green light by Gedling Borough Council on March 31.

Residents living nearby told Nottinghamshire Live they would have preferred a pub to remain at the site but believe an apartment block will be less of an eyesore than the existing run-down building.

CC Building Contractors Ltd have begun to demolish the pub, which is thought to have been named after Phoenix Farm, where J. R. R. Tolkien's aunt lived. The author visited in 1914, aged 22, and is credited with writing the first draft of The Voyage of Earendel the Evening Star there.

Steve Westby, chairman of Nottingham CAMRA, said: "It is very sad. It's another community pub that has disappeared. All the other pubs in that area have gone - the Grey Goose and Westdale Tavern.

"Sadly it seems typical of what is happening in other suburbs. These pubs used to be the hub of the community."

The Phoenix opened in December 1965 and was almost identical to the Major Oak in Arnold. A former Home Ales pub, it used to serve the estate.
