'Demolition derby' - US media reacts to Man City thrashing of Manchester United

Manchester City hit arch-rivals Manchester United for six on Sunday afternoon, with the Blues blowing Erik ten Hag's side away in the Premier League. Hat-tricks from both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden helped the Blues on their way, with Anthony Martial (2) and Antony completing the scoring in a nine-goal thriller.

Eventually ending 6-3, City raced into a four goal lead before the break, before United put up something of a fight back to reduce the deficit. Pep Guardiola's side are currently second in the table being early pace setters Arsenal, with United slipping to 6th following the defeat.

Plenty of American media outlets covered the Manchester derby over the weekend. Here is a round-up of what they had to say:

Issy Ronald, CNN

''Ever since his arrival at Manchester City this summer, Erling Haaland has broken records at an astonishing rate.

''And the Norwegian phenom made even more history on Sunday when he became the first player to score a hat-trick in three consecutive English Premier League home matches as his side dismantled its crosstown rival Manchester United 6-3 to remain second in the league.

''After waiting 52 years for a player to score a hat-trick in the Manchester derby, City only had to wait six minutes for another as local hero Phil Foden completed his own in the 72nd minute, before United restored some respectability to the score line with two late goals.

''Haaland, who moved to City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, has scored 17 goals in 10 games, making him Europe’s most lethal marksman, and he was brilliant against United, not only scoring three but also creating two goals.''

James Benge and Chuck Booth, CBS

''Hat tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden lifted Manchester City to an emphatic 6-3 win over Manchester United on Sunday in Premier League action. City were in full flow from start to finish as Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne carved the United team apart, setting up the attack to feast in the Manchester derby.

''The Red Devils would get a consolation goal in the second half via Antony, but it wouldn't be enough to spark a comeback when they were already behind by four heading into the break. Cristiano Ronaldo began the match on the bench and remained there as an unused substitute. Anthony Martial scored two late goals for the visitors, one being a penalty kick.

''Haaland now has 14 Premier League goals as he takes his scoring streak in all competitions to eight consecutive matches for City. The Norway international has also now become the first player to score a hat trick in three consecutive home matches in league history. City stand alone as the only team in the league without a loss and move within one point behind Arsenal in the league table. The nine goals in the match also make this the highest scoring Manchester derby in history.''

Rob Dawson, ESPN

''If Sunday brought a memorable rendition of the Manchester derby, then it was memorable not just for the goals, but how lopsided and noncompetitive it was. Manchester City demolished Manchester United at Etihad Stadium 6-3 for the highest-scoring Manchester derby ever.

''Erling Haaland and Phil Foden combined for City's six goals, each scoring a hat trick, while Antony and Anthony Martial did their best to prevent United from total humiliation. Foden's hat trick was his first of his career.

''After wins over Liverpool and Arsenal this season, Man United fans will have turned up at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday believing they could get a positive result against Man City, but any hope was gone after just eight minutes.

''Pep Guardiola's side were already dominant before Phil Foden scored the first goal and United were lucky to be only 4-0 down at half-time after City had managed 15 shots on goal.''
