Democrats Shift Focus To Elite Donors, Losing Working-Class Support

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers hold an annual party convention, in Tokyo

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently hosted a Broadway fundraiser for President Biden, showcasing the Democrats' trend of star-studded events with large donors. In contrast, former President Trump has been focusing on small donor fundraising and attending less extravagant events. This shift in fundraising strategies has raised concerns among political insiders, especially as average voters are showing signs of disillusionment with the Biden administration.

Clinton co-produced a presentation of 'Suffs: The Musical' with tickets ranging from $500 to $5,000, with proceeds supporting the Biden Victory Fund and Women’s Leadership Forum. This event followed Biden's successful fundraising gala at Radio City Music Hall, where he raised over $26 million with the support of former presidents Obama and Clinton, as well as various celebrities.

On the other hand, Trump has been engaging in smaller-scale events, such as attending the wake of a slain NYPD officer. Despite trailing Biden in cash on hand, Trump leads in small-dollar donors, indicating a different approach to fundraising.

The recent high-profile Biden events have led to observations that the Democratic Party may be shifting its focus from working-class supporters to a more elite crowd. This change has sparked discussions about the evolving dynamics within the party and its appeal to different voter demographics.

While the Biden campaign has received significant support from Hollywood moguls and billionaires, it has also emphasized grassroots fundraising efforts. The campaign highlights that a majority of its donations are under $200, showcasing broad-based support.

Despite the fundraising success, recent polling data shows Trump leading in key battleground states, raising questions about the effectiveness of the fundraising strategies employed by both campaigns. The contrasting approaches of the two candidates reflect broader shifts in political fundraising and voter perceptions.
