Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeats veteran Colorado incumbent in major primary upset

  • Democratic socialist Melat Kiros achieved a significant upset in Colorado , defeating U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, a nearly 30-year incumbent, in a Democratic primary election.
  • Kiros, a 29-year-old lawyer and doctoral student, campaigned on an ambitious progressive platform, advocating for expanded government-backed healthcare, the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and an end to the conflict in Gaza.
  • Her victory is seen as a reflection of the growing influence of the progressive wing within the Democratic Party, following similar primary successes by other self-described democratic socialists and progressive candidates in different states.
  • Given that Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Denver, is a strong Democratic stronghold, Kiros is widely anticipated to secure the general election in November and assume office in January.
  • Celebrating her win, Kiros declared it part of a broader national movement, stating, 'We are winning from coast to coast. We are taking back our party and our country!', highlighting the ongoing challenge to established Democratic leadership.
