Democratic Senator Claims The Party Has No Clear Direction As Infighting Continues: 'We Don't Act As a Team'

Democratic Senator Elisa Slotkin again criticized her party's direction, claiming that continued infighting keeps it from adopting a clear, cohesive strategy.

Speaking at the Center for American Progress, Slotkin said the party is "like a solar system with no sun." "We don't act as a team, and when we don't work as a team, we turn our guns on each other, and it's so, so, so, fruitless," she added.

The senator was then asked if she had confidence in Democratic leadership in Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. She declined to answer.

"I work with them every single day. I push on them every day, especially in the Senate. I think they would attest to that. And we need to work as a team, and we need wartime generals who are gonna get us there because of what's going on in the country. And I have no big announcement to make. I would just say the pressure is there from inside the caucus, but also from the grassroots."

Slotkin went on to say the main divide is between those who see the new Trump administration as "an existential threat to democracy" and seek to actively resist it, and the ones who believe it to be "survivable." "I think we are churning behind closed doors to figure out which camp can win."

The senator's speech meant to describe "A New Vision for the Democratic Party." She said the focus should be on affordability and "pocketbook" issues, calling on colleagues to "get back to the basics."

Slotkin has been pushing her message since she won the Michigan Senate elections last year. In April she said she was launching a "military-style operational plan" to counter Donald Trump, urging her party to adopt a more aggressive posture heading into the 2026 election cycle.

In a speech to Michigan Democrats, Slotkin proposed a wide-ranging strategy to change public perception of the party and shift focus to economic messaging, institutional accountability, and pragmatic leadership.

Slotkin, a former CIA analyst and national security official, said the Democratic Party must stop appearing "weak and woke" and instead project strength by embracing what she referred to as "the goddamn Alpha energy" of Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell.

"Trump is doing a whole bunch of things that I think are a threat to our economy and a threat to our democracy," she told POLITICO, "and I have a responsibility on behalf of my state to point that out and try to do something about that."
