Democratic primaries: What time are results and how many delegates are up for grabs?

Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, three US states are holding primary elections on Tuesday.

There are now just three candidates left in the 2020 Democratic race: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard

The two clear frontrunners – Biden and Sanders – faced each other in the first one-on-one debate of this election cycle on Sunday, sparring over the Covid-19 outbreak, Cuba and a number of other issues.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest Democratic primaries.

What states are voting and how many delegates do they have?

People in Florida, Illinois and Arizona are all taking to the polls. Ohio called off its primary hours before polls were due to open because of the “imminent threat” from coronavirus. Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana and Maryland have also pushed back their elections.

At 219, Florida has the most delegates up for grab tonight. Illinois has 155 and Arizona 67.

So far, Biden has 898 pledged delegates and Sanders has 745, according to Google data.

What time do polls close?

The polls will begin to close in Florida at 7 pm EST, and officially close in Illinois at 8 pm EST and in Arizona at 10 pm EST.

Who’s going to win?

Biden looks set to win in all three states, according to polls, regardless of the expected low turnout from coronavirus. In the build-up to the votes he has been polling higher in Florida, Arizona and Illinois, however many polling stations have been under immense stress today, with several in Florida having to close. At this stage results are expected to come in as normal from all three elections.
