A group of Democratic governors are actively strategizing behind the scenes on how to navigate the upcoming challenges posed by President-elect Donald Trump's administration. These governors have been meticulously analyzing Project 2025, a blueprint that outlines potential actions and responses to Trump's policies. They are studying their executive powers and state laws, as well as collaborating on ways to publicly criticize any extreme measures taken by the incoming White House.
Furthermore, the governors have been discreetly stockpiling abortion medication and preparing for scenarios where the White House may attempt to nationalize their state police or National Guard units for deportation raids. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the future and the need for preparedness.

Many Democratic governors had already begun formulating plans even before President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race and Vice President Kamala Harris became the party nominee. Citing Trump's previous electoral strength and the impact of his first term, these governors felt a responsibility to strategize, especially given the Republican majorities in the House and Senate.
Despite their proactive approach, the governors are cautious about being perceived as part of an outdated resistance movement. The lessons learned from the 2024 election have highlighted the challenges of engaging in divisive 'us vs. them' dynamics with Trump. As the primary bastions of Democratic power, the governors are keen on finding a balance between opposition and constructive engagement with the new administration.
