Democratic debate: Cory Booker explains his 'side eye' look when Beto O'Rourke spoke Spanish

The moment Beto O'Rourke decided to flaunt some Spanish skills during Wednesday's Democratic debate caught many by surprise, including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker.

Many on Twitter commented on his side-eye, with the image going viral on Twitter afterwards.

Mr Booker, the first African-American Senator from New Jersey speaks fluent Spanish, along with former Housing Secretary Julian Castro.

Once Beto O'Rourke started answering a question in Spanish, speculation around the meaning of his face took over Twitter.

When asked by CNN’s Anderson Cooper what was going on in his head at the moment, Booker said: “I just knew he had laid a gauntlet down, and I was talking a little bit with [Julián] Castro. Both he and I knew, as people who can speak Spanish, that now we were gonna bring it as well.”

The first Democratic debate featured Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke, most notably known for his close Senatorial race against Ted Cruz in 2018, Hawaiian Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and former Secretary Julian Castro, and others. They debated their plans on healthcare, immigration, foreign policy and climate change.

Mr Trump made his opinion on Wednesday’s broadcast clear, denouncing it as “BORING!” on Twitter live from Air Force One as he jetted out to attend the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

Thursday night's debate will feature star candidates Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg.
