Democrat rants at pamphlet gaffe

The Election Commission (EC) has downplayed a complaint by Parit Wacharasindhu, a Democrat Party MP candidate for Bangkok, who accused the agency of printing flawed pamphlets about candidates.

The pamphlets may have errors, but voters can obtain information about candidates from other sources, including an app which the EC has made available, Deputy EC secretary-general, Nat Laosisawakul, said on Monday.

Mr Parit cried foul after he came cross pamphlets handed to voters in London showing his picture with the Pheu Thai Party's name written directly above it. He said it could confuse voters into thinking he belonged to Pheu Thai, the Democrats' main rival.

The pamphlets were apparently printed incorrectly, which saw a candidate's picture placed next to the name of a party which should belong to the candidate in an adjacent box.

Advance voting is taking place both in and outside of Thailand. Overseas, many Thais have registered to vote at designated venues, mostly at Thai embassies. Ballots were also mailed to voters who would have trouble getting to an embassy.

Mr Parit is running in Bangkok's Constituency 13 covering parts of Bang Kapi and Wang Thong Lang districts. He said the pamphlet gaffe seriously affects him and other candidates and has demanded the EC take responsibility for the error.

Mr Nat said there have been no problems in the advance voting in Thailand. He said Mr Parit may be trying to create some publicity for himself.

Meanwhile, Palang Pracharath Party candidate Kanoknuch Klingsang wants the EC to investigate an incident in which her election campaign cards were found with Buddha amulets in the mail boxes of six homes in Bangkok's Constituency 10 where she is standing. She said people might think she is vote buying with the amulets.
