Democrat Flips Florida House Seat Where Trump Resides in Election Shocker

President Donald Trump home district will now be represented by a Democrat in the Florida legislature following the results of a shocking state House race.

Democrat Emily Gregory was projected Tuesday to win Florida's 87th District House race over Trump-endorsed Republican Jon Maples by two points. Just two years ago, a Republican won the district, which includes Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, by 19 points, according to the Associated Press.

"Mar-a-Lago's state House district just flipped from red to blue, which should have Republicans worried about their chances this November," Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee wrote on X.

Williams added that a Republican district in Trump's "own backyard shouldn't be in play for Democrats, but tonight proves Republicans are vulnerable everywhere."

Gregory was a first-time candidate who operates FIT4MOM, a Palm Beach fitness community for pregnant and postpartum women. Her opponent, Maples, is a financial planner who previously held a city council seat, POLITICO reported.

"I think it demonstrates where the Florida voter is," Gregory told POLITICO after her win. "They want someone who is focused on solutions and the issues and not focused on the noise."

Democrats also flipped Florida's state Senate District 14 seat. In that race, first-time candidate Brian Nathan, a Navy veteran, defeated Republican State Rep. Josie Tomkow by 408 votes, the Florida Phoenix reported.

The newspaper noted that Nathan won despite the fact that Tomkow had substantially more money, was an established political candidate, and that it was a Republican leaning district. In 2022, a Republican won the race by 10 points and in 2024 the district favored Trump by 7 points.

Both races were special elections as the Republicans who held the seats vacated them to accept different positions.
